About Us

The RMDBC was founded in 2014 as a nested micro-enterprise at Rancho Mastatal Sustainable Education Center.   Our team lives and works on the farm and campus of Rancho Mastatal, while working to develop world class educational programs, regenerative agricultural models, and a food secure bioregion.

Rachel Jackson

Rachel holds a Masters Degree in Sustainable Landscape Planning and Design from the Conway School in Conway, Massachusetts. She has been practicing permaculture in the tropics since 2009, working in both the rainforests of Costa Rica and the dry forests of Nicaragua. She is passionate about creating harmonious, healthy relationships between humans and the landscape. From urban renewal projects in New England to food forests in Latin America, Rachel has used her skills to create integrated, whole-system designs in difficult locations.

Scott Gallant

Scott is a food system designer from Harrison, Ohio. He graduated from Wabash College in 2008 with a degree in Economics. He and his partner Laura traveled and volunteered extensively in Latin America prior to arriving at Rancho Mastatal. Over the past several years he has become a leader in the broader Costa Rican permaculture community.  Passionate about tropical agriculture, he is currently immersing himself in the fields of Keyline Design and Holistic Management, while working with an amazing group to build the Ranch's food production systems.

Nic Donati

Nic joined the Ranch in 2007, falling in love with the community and lifestyle he experienced there.  Good with his hands, he has developed a wide range of skills in Costa Rica and through the world .  The lure of the Ranch as a community and working environment have continually drawn him back and he now considers Mastatal his home.  He enjoys many things about this lifestyle including communal living, proximity to wild natural habitats, running around on the football field, solving diverse problems, and wielding tools from chisels to chainsaws to trowels.  He loves and appreciates the freedom afforded to him to express and practice his ideas, develop new skills and hone existing ones, but above all else he believes in the ideology of the Ranch. He believes that to engage, educate and nurture a desire in people to change the way we live and take more responsibility for every aspect of our lives from food production, to healthcare, to energy production and everything else inbetween is the only way things are going to change.
